“The best way to help the compulsive drinker and ourselves is to build our own strength, correct our own attitudes, be kind, and learn how to detach from the problem." “When tempted to aid others, I remember the little chickens and refrain from interfering in a natural process. Today, I do not do for others what they can do for themselves, nor do I pretend to understand the timing involved in God's plan for someone else's life. I have learned in the [#AlAnon] program that making mistakes and changing behaviors is a personal journey that leads me to spiritual growth and understanding. That experience cannot be pushed or prolonged by others." “When helping hurts—my chick lesson," October 2015 "The Forum" #FamilyRecovery #support #recovery #alcoholism

Many teens wonder if their parents really love them when they don't act like they care. What teens don't understand is that love is distorted by the disease of alcoholism. Often an alcoholic parent takes out their hostilities on their children and other family members in irrational ways, and may not be able to express love appropriately. Family members that live with an alcoholic may act irrationally as well. “Youth and the Alcoholic Parent" (P-21) If you're a teenager and your life has been affected by someone else's drinking, an Alateen meeting may be helpful for you. Find a local Alateen meeting in the U.S., Canada, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico at goo.gl/tdc4eo. If you're outside of these areas, visit goo.gl/XOXeDY. If there aren't any meetings in your area, try an Alateen chat meeting, goo.gl/5ENreK. #Alateen #AlAnon #FamilyDisease #FamilyRecovery #fact #understand #shatterthestigma #stopthesilence #freshstart #newbeginnings #alcoholism #alcoholicproblems #staydrunk #intoxicated #chat

“I went to [Al-Anon] meetings and, for months, I couldn't tell you what I heard or what I said. I cried and got hugs. I wasn't comfortable with hugs, and I'm sure hugging me was like hugging a piece of plywood. I went back, continued to get hugs, gradually started hearing what was said, and began sharing. I heard people talking about their childhood experiences growing up in an alcoholic home, and I could identify with them, even though I didn't grow up in one. I heard people talking about living with an active alcoholic, and I could identify with them as well, even though I didn't share their experience. Still, I kept coming back. I could relate." “What kept me coming back?" “The Forum" March 2017 Al-Anon is a Twelve Step program for the families and friends of alcoholics.
