Originally a weekly newspaper called The Pekin Register, it was purchased by Dowdall and Joseph Irwin of Peoria in Oct. 1873, who changed the name of the paper to The Pekin Times. Irwin turned the paper into a five-column daily paper on Jan. 3, 1881, the official birthday of the Pekin Daily Times. The newspaper is now owned by Perinton, GateHouse Media Inc. (formerly called Liberty Group Publishing), a corporation owned by Fortress Investment Group.
