Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller at Koinonia Farm, Georgia. The farm was founded in 1942 by Clarence Jordan as an interracial, Christian community. Jordan and the Fullers, together, developed “partnership housing.” This concept focuses on those in need of adequate shelter working side by side with volunteers to build simple, decent houses.
This is the same concept that is used in Ohio today. The new homeowners in Southeast Ohio, like those at Koinonia Farm, pay no interest loans to help finance a sustainable fund that is then used to build homes not for profit in the future. The Athens County affiliate was chartered in 1990 with a board of directors and a volunteer staff. It merged and became Habitat for Humanity of Southeast Ohio in 2013. HFHSEO serves Athens, Hocking, Meigs, Morgan, Muskingum, Noble and Perry Counties.
