Many of you may be hearing discussions among the young people in your lives about a popular new Netflix series, 13 Reasons Why. The show, which has received a great deal of media coverage and is produced by Selena Gomez, features a graphic sexual assault scene as well as a vivid portrayal of the main character Hannah’s suicide. We took a moment to ask Sheila Nelson, the Program Manager for Maine's Adolescent Health and Injury Prevention Program, for ideas about how to safely and responsibly guide the discussions happening about the show. For some of her tips, as well as material from the National Association of School Psychologists, check out this handy flyer we made to help you discuss the show with your youth.

If you are a parent and even if you are not you might be hearing lots of chatter about the new original Netflix series " Thirteen Reasons Why" This may have prompted many questions such as.... - Should my child/teen be watching this? Should I be watching with my child? Should I preview this prior to my child/teen watching? - How do I have a conversation with my child/teen about bullying, sexual harassment, sexual assault and/or suicide? - How do I support a child/teen who may disclose they have been bullied, sexually harassed, sexually abused, sexually assaulted, and/or have or are having thoughts of suicide? - What resources are available in my area? If you have any of these questions or others please join AMHC Sexual Assault Services and AMHC Emergency Services for a discussion around your questions and information that will help you navigate these sensitive topics with your children and teens.
