"St. Joseph the Worker in McAllen is a Community of 5,000 Hispanic families celebrating their faith and rich traditions with gusto. The parish received the 'Communion and Mission Award' in the year 200 from the National Pastoral Life Center for exemplifying 'A parish whose communion with Jesus, small communities of disciples and community organizing for justice link personal conversion with social transformation.'
St. Joseph the worker was decreed a parish in 1967, though it originated as a mission of Sacred Heart Church in McAllen back in 1954. It was originally placed under the spiritual guidance of the Oratorian Fathers, who were in the Diocese under the authority of the Pope.
A Texas Historical Marker was issued in 1975 for the Bell Called 'Bessie.' The 400-pound bell was used on the steamboat 'Bessie,' which was the last one to ply the Rio Grande and med its final trip in 1926.
