The Gifford Shelter is a cageless, no-kill facility founded in 1884 through the collaboration of philanthropist Ellen Gifford and prominent Bostonian Nathan Appleton.

We are the oldest cageless, no-kill shelter in the United States!

Commenting on a Gifford Cat Shelter Social Media Site Gifford Cat Shelter shares information, images and video with the public through external social media websites. Comments made by the public to these sites are reviewed and, while comments will not be edited by Gifford Cat Shelter personnel, a comment may be deleted if it violates the comment policy described here.

• Comments should be related to the posted topic for Gifford Cat Shelter's social media page or post. Gifford Cat Shelter social media accounts are not meant for comments that do not directly relate to the purpose or topic of the social media website or for service requests. For general comments or communications concerning the shelter or operations, please contact the appropriate staff representative directly.

• Gifford Cat Shelter’s social media accounts require cross posting to be authorized prior to posting or “tagged” appropriately so that posts can be reviewed by our social media administrator prior to publication. Failure to do so will result in removal of the post.

• The use of obscene, threatening or harassing language is prohibited and will be immediately removed. Personal attacks of any kind or offensive comments that target or disparage any ethnic, racial, age, or religious group, gender, sexual orientation or disability status are prohibited. Comments advocating illegal activity or posting of material that violates copyrights or trademarks of others are prohibited. Gifford Cat Shelter reserves the right to “block” any individual making such comments.
