Makit
Makit and our original Make-A-Plate® kit have been providing family fun for over 4 decades. In fact, we mold up to 1 million plates a year for our customers. Each plate made is unique and personal.

Makit began as the creation of Bob Hodges in 1969. One day a neighbor (who was a teacher) said, “Wouldn’t it be fantastic to capture kids’ artwork on something useful, instead of it falling off the refrigerator and throwing it out?” With a background in plastics and dinnerware manufacturing Bob saw an opportunity to create a craft medium that children and parents would love. The Make A Plate was born. School teachers across the country continue to use our products for class art projects and family traditions have sprung up as generations create designs that become treasured heirlooms.

What was already a well-known brand became even better as the company grew. Between 2003-2006 Makit became an official licensee for Disney, Disney/Pixar, Girl Scouts, HIT Entertainment, (Thomas & Friends, Barney, Bob the Builder), and Build A Bear. It also launched its first E-Commerce site, bringing the company into the larger world market.

The stories we hear from our customers are legendary. Cary Grant was so enthralled with the idea of putting children’s drawings on plates that at one time he once offered to buy the company! Lady Bird Johnson had cherished the more than 500 plates of her own, created by her daughters and friends over the years. Celebrities like Dick Clark, Kevin Bacon, Madonna, Matthew Broderick, and Nathan Lane have all created and signed Make A Plate plates for charity auctions.

At Makit we care about making memories last forever. We have no rivals when it comes to preserving one of a kind, customer-created artwork on melamine dinnerware. We have further distinguished ourselves by using the same unique process to create Photo Plates as well. Whether it is a hand-drawn masterpiece, a valuable picture from a family album, or a new picture from a digital camera, the results are amazing.
