David Mintz, founder and creator of Tofutti Brands, Inc. isn’t known as the man who licked ice cream for nothing. Over 30 years ago, Mintz began experimenting with tofu after countless pleas from Kosher customers of his New York buffet. Since the majority of Mintz’s customers weren’t able to eat dairy and meat at the same meal without breaking their Kosher habits, Mintz began using tofu in cakes, cookies, and other foods traditionally prepared with meat and dairy.
In 1981, Mintz achieved his ultimate goal, which was to create a dairy-free, ice cream-like frozen dessert and so he founded Tofutti Brands, Inc. and began selling his creation to the New York City. Soon, Tofutti became a popular treat for people who wanted to avoid dairy, keep kosher, were vegan, and were lactose intolerant. 30 years later, Mintz is still creating Tofutti products from his headquarters in Cranford, New Jersey.
