The Sarasota Police Department has 158 sworn police officers and civilian staff.

Sarasota was incorporated as a town on October 14, 1902 with 53 citizens. At that time, Blair was elected Marshall.

Marshall Blair was paid $10 per month, plus $ per arrest, plus 2½% of all license fees collected.

The speed limit in Sarasota was 6 mph and hogs and cattle roamed the dirt streets.

A jail was built for $ and opened on December 14, 1902 on the north side of Cedar Point.

The 1st laws went into effect on January 1, 1903.

Marshall Blair resigned on March 10, 1903 due to the “starvation wages” and McRae was appointed as Marshall.

Hodges was elected Marshall in 1908.

In 1913, Sarasota was incorporated as a City with approximately 2,000 citizens. As a result of this, Marshal Hodges became the Chief of Police. Chief Hodges served until 1921.

1925: The office for the police was located in front of City Hall on Bayfront.

No application required to be hired.
No training of new Police Officers.
No qualifications with firearms required.
No liability insurance.
The officer had to purchase their own gun to use on duty.
Pay was $90 per month.
Work schedule was 12 hour shifts, 7 days per week.
No time off except for 2 weeks vacation.
No pension.
No health insurance.
No union.
An officer hired in 1925 remembered starting with the Sarasota Police. The Mayor simply stated, “He looks big enough.” The Mayor then told him “Be helpful to strangers. We are trying to build a tourist town here.” Officer LeGette was the 6th Officer hired and had a career lasting 39 years.

1926: Population = 4500
SPD had a force of 10 men

1930: The first “police station” was a 10’x10’ office located in the Palmer Bank Building at 5 Points. Whenever the phone would ring, a light at 5 Points would flash to let the Officer know they needed to come in and answer the phone call.

1938: The police station moved to the corner of State and Lemon Ave.

1959: The police station at 2050 Ringling Boulevard was completed. Only the 1st two floors were built. The building was known for its architecture and openness. The city jail was located on the 2nd floor.

1970: The police station was re-designed to be more of a “pill box” structure due to recent bombings of Governmental buildings in the country.
