The Wilmington & Western Railroad was opened in 1872. Purchased in 1883 by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, the line offered freight and passenger service over 20 miles of track from downtown Wilmington to Landenberg, PA.

At the turn of the century, a resort was opened along the railroad's tracks at Brandywine Springs, and the railroad's passenger business flourished. By 1931, however, the Great Depression began to take its toll.

By the 1960's, the Railroad had dwindled to a limited freight operation. Revived by a dedicated team of volunteers, who incorporated their growing organization as Historic Red Clay Valley. HRCV owns and operates the present-day Wilmington & Western Railroad.
