In 1967, a young Cal graduate student named John Lion directed a play called The Lesson. The play did so well that it moved off-campus to a tiny space at the Steppenwolf Bar in Berkeley. Legend has it that John wrote rave reviews of the play under a pseudonym, but we neither confirm nor deny these reports (it was the Sixties, after all). The play ran for six months. Our growth over these years has earned our artists international critical praise, fellowships, awards and the Pulitzer Prize.
